The Nashville Adult Literacy Council’s mission is to help Nashville adults with the reading, writing, and English-speaking skills they need for the life they want. Learners at NALC reach their goals through literacy.

The real joy of our program is best shared by our participants, like Stephen:

Shortly after graduating from high school, Stephen realized that his reading and writing skills were not strong enough to pursue his educational and professional goals, so he came to NALC for help. Stephen and his volunteer tutor Kristen started working together. Over the last year, Stephen has increased his reading level, finished 2 and a half textbooks provided by NALC, and embarked on a new plumbing apprenticeship program.

Here are some other recent accomplishments from our learners:

  • I talk to my child's teacher. I feel more confident with schools.
  • We practice speaking English with my son.
  • I opened a checking account.
  • I passed the written driver's test so I can get my license.

Nashville continues to be one of the fastest-growing cities in Tennessee, with approximately 80 people moving here daily. However, this growth underscores a significant challenge: adult literacy and the ability to thrive. In 2003, 12% of Nashville adults scored at the lowest level of literacy, according to PIAAC data. Today, that number has ballooned to an estimated 22% and at least 122,000 Davidson County residents could benefit from improved literacy.

Adult literacy impacts every part of life—employment, poverty, healthcare, children’s academic performance, relationships, and reliance on social systems. For 43 years we have addressed these critical needs, and our mission is as relevant as ever.
