At the heart of every thriving community is the power of connection, learning, and mutual support. You and I understand that adult literacy is more than just the ability to read and write—it’s a gateway to opportunity, empowerment, and belonging. For our immigrant neighbors, literacy opens doors to new possibilities, helping them navigate life, pursue dreams, and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of our shared community. For native English speakers, reading and writing skills mean the ability to thrive.
Togetherness is what makes this journey possible. It’s the collective effort of neighbors, volunteers, educators, and supporters who believe in the transformative power of education. Every word learned, every skill gained, and every story shared strengthens the bonds that unite us.
Our Spring campaign, Together We Thive, is more than just words—it represents the real and powerful impact literacy has on people’s lives. Like learner Nermen and her volunteer tutor Laura (pictured above). Nermen is from Egypt and has been studying at NALC since 2022. Together with her tutor, Laura, she has grown her vocabulary. She better understands her children and even read the book Gandhi. Her long-term goal is to return to college to study computer science.
Your support connects you to learners like Nerman. In fact, each year NALC helps more than 400 adults improve essential literacy skills, for free. More than 60% of learners at NALC have achieved a personal or academic goal this year. Your donation helps us fund:
- Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs for adults who read at less than an eighth-grade level.
- English Language Learner (ELL) programs for adult immigrants with limited English skills.
